Jack:
Is the trench coat necessary? Sam Spade called, he wants his outfit back. You stick out like a sore thumb.
Hoplite:
Hmph. Yeah, I’d rather not get shot. I need hide the armor’s bulk somehow. Bullets don’t bounce off of me Mr. Superman.
Jack:
Hey shut up, those f*ckers still hurt .
(Jack and Hoplite enter the club. The bouncer eyes Hoplite suspiciously, Jack waves him off and the two walk inside. Heavy bass music pounds the clubs as well as flashing lights.)
Jack:
Looks fun.
Hoplite:
Don’t get too carried away. This is a business trip.
(Armed thugs watch Jack and Hoplite cross the dance floor to the upper VIP section. Mouth is an older, scrawny man with a greased comb over. He smokes a cigar and drinks something expensive at the table. Four bodyguards stand over Mouth, protecting, and making sure he doesn’t say anything too important. The bodyguards prepare to start a fight with Jack and Hoplite as the two approach Mouth. Mouth waves them and encourages the pair to sit down. Hoplite is very careful to keep the brim of his hat hiding his helmet.)
Jack:
Mouth?
Mouth:
Yeah.
(Mouth looks at his watch.)
Mouth:
Right on the dot. You want anything?
Jack:
A beer. Something local.
Hoplite:
Water.
(One of the thugs brings the drinks to the table. Jack is given a large, heavy mug. Hoplite is scornfully a given tiny paper cup.)
Mouth:
Did you get it?
(Jack pulls out a small USB drive and places it on the table.)
Jack:
Those are all the files you wanted.
(Mouth picks up the USB drive and examines it. The moment he touches blue sparks run up his arm, and lines data color his eyes. Jack shoots Hoplite a nervous glance.
Hoplite:
(whispering)
He’s not supposed to have powers.
Jack:
(whispering)
Relax.
Mouth:
I suppose I should thank you Mr…
Jack:
Dugrei.
(Mouth looks Jack dead in the eye, Hoplite looks away and palms his face.)
Mouth: Mr. Dugrei. That’s a peculiar name. However, the files look legit. Cheers.
(Mouth drains his drink. Jack takes a drink. Hoplite goes to drink, and he raises an eyebrow when he smells the water. He puts his cup down without drinking.)
Hoplite:
Can we see Reiner now?
Mouth:
No, Now you can get the hell out.
(Hoplite slaps his hands on the table.)
Hoplite:
That wasn’t the deal.
Mouth:
I just decided that now you’ve got to sweeten the deal. Negotiate a little.
Jack:
Negotiate? Well if that’s the case…
(Jack drains the mug.)
Jack:
I’ll have to play hardball.
(Jack throws the heavy mug into Mouth’s face. Mouth is thrown out of his chair and knocked out cold. Jack flips the table over and sucker punches of the body guards in the face. Two of the bodyguards grab Hoplite by the arms and hurl him out of the chair. The last steps back and stars yelling into a microphone on his collar)
Thug:
We’ve got a problem.
(Hoplite does a back flip as the thugs hold onto his arms. The flip twists his arms out of the thug’s grip. He lands and rolls backward away from the thugs. He rolls up onto his feet in an athletic move. The hat flies off during the roll and the collar of the coat is ruffled, hinting at the armor beneath. The thugs rush towards him, Hoplite flexes his back. The shield stored on his back explodes open, ripping the trench coat to shreds. A stored helmet reassembles itself around Hoplite’s face. Hoplite pulls off the ripped coat as he sidesteps and clotheslines one thug, then removes the shield from his back and slams it into the other. Meanwhile, Jack gets punched in the stomach by the thug who called for help. The punch has no effect at all. Jack looks up from the thrown punch straight into the face of the astounded thug. The thug is then seen flying out of the second floor balcony. He lands in the middle of the dance floor. The patrons clear out and thugs look up toward the second floor. Jack is sticking his head over the railing checking to see where the thug landed. A bouncer on the ground floor pulls out a pistol and fires a shot that lands in the pillar next to Jack’s head. Jack pulls back and yells to Hoplite.)
Jack:
They’ve got friends!
(Hoplite draws his sidearm. It’s massive firearm, a combination of a sub machine gun and a magnum pistol.)
Hoplite:
This is going to get messy.
(A pair of thugs reaches the top of the stairs with revolvers drawn. They shoot at Jack, who dives for cover behind the up turned table. He looks around for a way out and decides to deliver a massive two legged kick to the central leg of the table. The table soars across the second floor and into the stairwell, where it smashes into the thugs firing their revolvers. Jack hops up and grabs the USB that is next to the unconscious Mouth.)
Jack:
Pleasure doing business with you.
(Jack rushes down the stairs to meet another pair of thugs face to face on the stairs. The thug in front reaches for a pistol, but he is too slow. Jack takes the opportunity and kicks the thug in the chest, sending the thug flying off the stairs and into the center of the dance floor. The other thug watches his partner fly and freezes when he meets Jack eye to eye. Jack smirks and cracks his knuckles. Before Jack and can beat the thug, the two thugs that were knocked down by the table grab Jack from behind in a chokehold.)
Jack:
Can’t you just stay down?
(Jack ducks and flips the chokehold thug onto the one in front of him. He twists around and grabs the other table thug. In a wide sweep, Jack yanks the thug off of his feet and smashes him against the stair case’s support beam. The stairs creak as the support beam cracks under the weight of the upper story.)
Jack:
Bad idea.
(Jack shields himself as the entire staircase collapses on top of him. Part of the upper floor collapses down, leaving a large ramp down near the stairs. Hoplite watches this from cover.)
Hoplite:
You see, this is why we can’t have nice things.
(Hoplite twists out of cover. The bouncer fires a shot that Hoplite easily deflects off of his shield. Hoplite fires a shot in return and hits the bouncer. Hoplite complains as he is moving.)
Hoplite:
This was supposed a quiet, easy mission.
(Hoplite stops behind a pillar overlooking the collapsed floor.)
Hoplite:
And you go destroy half of a frickin’ night club!
(Jack pushes pieces of rubble off of himself.)
Jack:
Keep yapping. It’s not going to get you down from there.
(A door at the back of the club opens up. A squad of thugs is heavily armed with bullet proof vests, automatic weapons and shotguns.)
Jack:
Crap.
(The squad rushes up on Jack. Jack climbs out of the debris pile and picks up a loose, heavy board. He rushes the squad and smacks the first one in the head with the board, breaks it on a second thug. He rips the gun of the third’s hands and knocks him unconscious with the butt of the shotgun. The remaining three cock their weapons and prepare to fire on Jack. Hoplite sees Jack taking on the thug squad and takes a running start toward the railing on the collapsed floor. He tosses his shield onto the railing and rides it down like a skateboard. Hoplite fires his weapon and drops two of three thugs before he reaches the floor. The third turns and opens fire on Hoplite. Hoplite flips his shield up and blocks the bullets. He maintains his momentum and smacks the third thug with his shield. Hoplite stops to catch his breath after knocking the final thug unconscious.)
Jack:
Show off.
Hoplite:
We’ve still got to find Reiner.
(The doors to the back room swing open. Both look up and see Reiner. Reiner is a tiny, frail man. Tattoos run all across his face. He wears a luxurious robe and pair of long baggy pants. Hoplite raises his weapon on Reiner, Jack stands ready to move. )
Reiner:
You are horrible guests, gentlemen. I hoped that we could at least be civil to each other, if only for awhile.
Hoplite:
Joseph Leonard Reiner, you are an unregistered super human. You are to register and follow U.N. protocol-
Reiner:
Hoplite, I am simply trying to run a reputable business here.
Hoplite:
Doesn’t matter. As a super human you’re classified as a weapon of mass destruction and must be monitored at all times.
(Reiner raises his arms and lets his robe drape off of him. Large, beautiful tattoos cover his upper body. Flames, dragons, birds are all interwoven into the tattoo designs.)
Reiner:
How am I, a frail old man, a weapon of mass destruction?
Jack:
(whispering to Hoplite) Watch the tattoos.
Hoplite:
(Whispering)
I know.
HOPLITE (CONT’D)
(Louder, directed towards Reiner)
Your superpowers pose a threat to global safety. Either you follow U.N. law, or we bring you in, dead or alive.
Reiner:
It’s a shame we cannot reach an understanding.
(A tattoo on Reiner’s eyebrow twitches and starts moving on his skin. It shoots across his skin, onto the surface of his eye, and disappears in the pupil. A green starts to shine out of his pupil’s. The other tattoos begin to animate on his body. He begins to grow in size, his muscles grow and expand to twice their size in seconds. A Chinese dragon tattoo flies down Reiner’s arm and forms a head around his clenched fist.)
Reiner:
No. I’m afraid I will not become the U.N.’s pawn today.
(Reiner throws a punch with dragon fist. He opens his hand, mimicking the shape of a jaw. A burst of red flame streams out of his palm. Jack and Hoplite jump out of the way, narrowly avoiding being burnt to a crisp. Hoplite fires two rounds at Reiner. A shield tattoo moves to the back of Reiner’s hand, and he deflects the two shots with his fist. Jack charges Reiner while he is deflecting the shots. A boulder tattoo shifts to Reiner’s forehead. Jack throws a punch. Reiner grabs Jack’s outstretched wrist and punches him square in the face. Jack’s head snaps back, he blinks, surprised at the incredible force of the hit. Reiner slides his foot, and twists Jack to the ground with a judo move. Reiner prepares to finish Jack with a punch while he is on the ground, Jack rolls away and Reiner’s punch cracks the concrete floor. Jack climbs to his feet. Reiner’s strikes a fighting stance while angel wings shift to his back and begin to flap . Reiner takes a few steps, and then leaps high into the air. He bounds off of one of the room’s pillars and launches toward Hoplite. Hoplite barely has time to raise his shield before Reiner hits him. Reiner rams Hoplite’s shield, and sends Hoplite skidding across the dance floor and into the opposite wall. Reiner turns to Jack, and jumps into the air. He twists in the air, and delivers a forty foot tornado kick to the side of Jack’s head. Jack sent sprawling to the ground. Reiner sees that Jack is down and looks back at Hoplite. Hoplite has already closed the distance between them and throws a punch with the edge of his shield. The shield clobbers Reiner in the forehead. The boulder tattoo on his forehead shatters in a flash of green light. A tattoo of a lightning moves down his left arm. Hoplite moves to punch with the shield again. Reiner ducks underneath the blow, and catches Hoplite’s shield arm from the inside. He punches him in the torso with a lightning fueled punch. Sparks fly as Hoplite scrapes across the floor in response. Hoplite is knocked unconscious. Jack crawls to his feet.)
Jack:
(grumbling to self)
If it was going to be easy they wouldn’t of had us do it.
(Reiner charges Jack. He fires bolts of lightning and fire. Jack clumsily dodges these as he rushes toward Reiner. Jack slide tackles Reiner, knocking him off his feet. Reiner quickly hops back up, and grabs Jack by the back of the head as Jack is getting up.)
Reiner:
You’ll see it one day.
(The tattoos on Reiner’s face twist and contort as he talks. It is a terrifying sight as everything in his face throbs, twists and exaggerates with the motions of his face. Reiner bashes Jack’s head against the floor.)
Reiner:
The U.N. isn’t looking out for anybody.
(Reiner tosses Jack face first into a pillar. He grabs Jack by the hair and pulls his head up so he can look him in the eye. Reiner’s eyes have no pupils, they are pure green, with streaks of wildly flailing energy running through them.)
Reiner:
Might makes right, my friend.
(Reiner smacks Jack’s head against the pillar. Reiner releases Jack.)
Reiner:
They’ll be free to do whatever they think is right to you.
(Jack crawls to his feet)
Jack:
Will you quit talking?
(Reiner smirks. He strikes a fighting stance and charges Jack. Reiner throws a punch. Jack grabs and pinches Reiner’s punch in his armpit. With his free arm he grabs Reiner’s shoulder. Jack reels back to head butt Reiner. Reiner is stunned by the head butt, and Jack releases the pinned arm. He hits Reiner in the face with a left hook, a right hook, and then a heavy punch. Reiner is sent flying in a burst of green light. The light fades from Reiner’s eyes and his muscles shrink down to their normal size. Reiner falls unconscious. Jack helps hoplite back up onto his feet.)
Jack:
Mission accomplished.
(Jack gives a friendly slap on the back to Hoplite. Hoplite is nearly knocked over by the play slap.)
Hoplite:
Ow. We’ve gotta call the clean-up crew. We seem to leave messes everywhere we go.
(The two look out on their handiwork. The club is utterly destroyed, there are deep cracks in the floor and pillars.)
