2054_ Full Rough+outlines

[Montage of science, history, violence, diagrams of space and machines- all information important to a cloned grunt)

(The montage stops with a close-up on the right side of Jake’s face, centered on the eye. The camera slowly zooms out to reveal the locker room.)
Jake: (interior) I always wondered why they loved their mama so much. Always, they loved their mother unconditionally. I could not understand it. Maybe we really are different.
(The camera angle changes, there are several J clones changing on his side of the locker room. Several clones walk through the doors into the cafeteria. Jake lags behind the crowd, identified by his cap and the 1891 on his shirt.)
Jake: (Interior)I am Jake 1891. And I am a clone.

(Daily clone life. Needs to keep the audience fascinated with the futuristic technology in daily life. J1891 simply goes through the paces of life. A bell wkes him up, tells him where to go- he just mindlessly follows. History Exposition, Basic description of singularity )

(Jake sits down at a cafeteria table with a group of other J-clones. Andrews’ squad laughs and distracts Jake for a moment. The other clones are simply focused on food.)
Eric: So then her mom comes home. I’m panicking and try to get dressed as I run down the stairs. As I’m trying to get my pants on, I slip and *wham*! I hit the floor and get knocked out cold, my bare ass hanging out, just as her mom opens the door. (group laughs) Yeah, I stopped seeing her after that.

(Changes to the current squads are announced. The clones added to Andrews’ Blue Squad)

(Andrews walks down the line of soldiers, and inspects the two clones added to his personal squad)
Andrews: J1891, do you have a name?
Jake: (Licks his lips, is slightly anxious about revealing a name) Jake… Sir.
Andrews: Good to have you Jake. (Inspects Dog) DO you have a name?
Dog: No sir: Unit-K909 reporting in.
Andrews: K909? (grins) K9/ We’ll call you Dog.
Eric: (Shrugs) I like it.

(Brief intro for Annete at home with family. Interactions between Andrews and family. Time for the marines to go out on a routine tour of duty)

(The marines are being sent off by their families. There are a few moments of various marines. Scott is focused on as a one of the generic marines, but longer for the audience to become familiar with his face. Eric shakes hands with his father and hugs a fiancé. Jake watches the goodbyes with only the slightest hint of confusion and longing. Dog is utterly oblivious to the crowd.)
(Andrews’ children are telling him about their parts in a school play. Andrews listens and encourages them with a smile)
Andrews: Alright, when I get back in a few months the first thing we’ll do is watch it on video!
Andrews’ Children: Come back soon daddy!
(Andrews stand up and faces his wife Alice.)
Alice: Three months, huh?
Andrews: It’s just routine patrols, Alice. We might not even leave the ship.
(Alice takes a deep breath, pulls out the rosary from underneath Andrews’ shirt, then rubs it in her hand.)
Alice: Just get home soon.
(Annete’s family is sending him off.)
Annete’s Mother: (breaking up)
Annete’s Father: (Pats Annete on the back, stifling his emotions) Good luck out there. We’ll miss you.
(Annete’s girlfriend stands in front of him, processing her emotions. She rushes forward and hugs him tightly then kisses him. They speak quietly to each other.)
Annete Girlfriend: Come back safe Cowboy.
Annete: Not a scratch on me.
Annete’s Girlfriend: Promise?
Annete: (With a smile in his voice) Promise.
(Ivan simply walks onto the ship with his bag, looking over Jake and Dog as he boards. Dog and Jake look at each other for instruction, then follow Ivan onboard.)
{Track Jake and Dog onto the ship, camera pans to black. Camera pans out to Jake and Dog inside} (Jake and Dog are in the ship’s armory. Both are seated and quietly inspecting their equipment. Jake is cleaning his helmet. Captain Andrews walks in carrying a can of spray paint. Both of the clones snap to attention)
Andrews: At ease. (Andrews tosses a can of spray paint to Jake.)
Jake: Paint?
Andrews: I need to know which clones are mine. (winks) Go crazy.
(Andrews leaves. The clones are stunned at the amicable gesture and instructions Jake shrugs and shakes the can of paint.)

[The VIP and his family see the Talos cruiser appear over Koreyang. Vip moves family back home. Marine ship arrives, is attacked. Receives radio SOS, marines scramble into gunships.Gunships leave the main marine ship. VIP is gathering family in locked and shuttered apartment. Scuffle outside of apartment door, his young son opens the door. A talos is there, kicks the child in face. Marine HQ relays orders to Andrews to evacuate a VIP. Gunships enter atmosphere, Gunships open up over a burning Koreyang. A generic clone on Blue Squad’s gunship is killed, the Gunship is shot down. Annete's POV groggily recovers from the crash. Marines are shot at as they run toward the VIP’s apartment building. They run up the stairs of the damaged building. There is evidence of violence in the building. They enter the VIP's apartment to find the family slaughtered.]

Andrews: “ Command, the V.I.P. and family are dead. (sighs) Requesting orders.”
Command: “Roger that Andrews. Abort the mission and assist in civilian evacuation. Gunship transport is en-route to pick you up.”
Jake:{Interior Monologue} “It wasn’t the sight of the bodies, or the disturbing violence. It was a flicker of an emotion and the look on their faces. {Jake looks at his teammates} That’s when I knew that there was something wrong with me. I don’t know what it is.”
Andres: Alright boys. They're sending Jimmy to pick us up. We'll meet him on the roof, then we're going to cover the evacuation.
(An explosion rocks the entire building). {Talos storm up the stairs. The squad stumbles after the impact}
Andrews: Get to the roof! Move!
(More explosions explode. An explosion destroys the stairs up as the marines approach, the building shudders and creaks)
Dog: The buildings coming down!
{A Talos soldier reaches the top floor Jake shoots it in the head and kills it. Talos are seen rushing up the stairs, and start firing through the floor. Bullets rip through the floor and walls around the marines)
Eric: We can’t stay here!
(Ivan is eyeing the neighboring building as Eric talks. He fires his cannon and blasts out a wall, then blows a hole in the nearby building)
Ivan: Follow me!
(Ivan takes a running jumps and leaps across the ten foot gap into the nearby building.)
Annete: (Annete waves off the others) Go! I’ll cover you!
(The clones follow. Dog follows leaps without hesitation, Jake glances back at the squad before jumping across. Both land safely, helped up by Ivan.)
(Annete starts to return fire back through the floor. Annete’s aim is solid, he kills Talos constructs with his return fire} Eric and Andrews jump through the opening into the nearby building. After Eric lands safely.)
Eric: They don’t teach that in basic training.
(Annete starts running out and begins his jump. A burst of Talos gunfire hits him mid air, leaving dents and black marks across his armor. Annete barely makes the jump, he lands hard and rolls to a stop)
Eric: Ann, you alright?
Annete: I’m fine, they didn’t penetrate the armor.
(A burst of gunfire rips into the room around the marines. Dog looks into the stairwell with Ivan.)
Dog: The top stories are collapsed- the Gunship can’t land!
(Ivan looks out towards a sky bridge connecting two sky scrapers. There is an open platform on the far building. A burst of bullets punches through the wall between him and the stairs down. He reloads his cannon and rushes to the elevator)
Ivan: What floor are we on?
Andrews: Twelve, why-
(Ivan blasts the elevator doors open with a shot from his cannon. Pieces of the elevator door rain down in the shaft.)
Ivan: Four floors, let’s move!
(Ivan jumps into the elevator shaft and grabs onto the elevator’s cables. He grinds down, sparks wildly flying from his metal glove. When he drops to his goal, he stops himself by kicking the walls, and blows the elevator doors out with his cannon, then hops out onto the floor. The squad follows Ivan, sliding down the elevator shaft and jumping out onto the lower floor.)
Eric: (Muttering) Damn, they don’t teach that *anywhere*.
( Andrews calls out instructions to gunship to land at the platform across the bridge as the marines run towards the platform.)
{In one continuous shot, the marines rush through the building and across the bridge as bullets spray the area around them and up to the platform. An explosion nearly hits them, the bridge is severely damaged as the marines cross it. One of the marines almost falls, is grabbed and pulled back to safety. The camera is from the POV of one of the marines. Gunfire and missile fly overhead from a different direction, the camera tracks a missile as it flies into Talos forces. The gunship hovers as the marines reach the platform. Jimmy is on the gunship, gives them a hand onto the vehicle.}
Jimmy: Need a hand? (Jokingly, as he helps the battle damaged Annete onboard) Wow, and you guys aren’t any worse for the wear.
(The gunship takes off from the platform and flies away from the apartment buildings. The squad takes the chance to catch their breath and take seats. The squad’s armor is covered in burn and bullet marks. Andrews hangs over the pilot’s shoulder and eyes the massive starship hovering over the city.)
Jimmy:I'm impressed, your guys are tough Captain. All of that and you didn't lose anyone.
Eric:(Nonchalant) Oohrah.
Andrews:(Stifling his emotions slightly) We lost the red squad clones.

Even then you guys are better off than the
Andrews: The cruiser hasn’t fired a shot since we’ve landed.
Eric: Yeah, something’s up.
Jake: Maybe they’re overheating?
Ivan: No. (Everyone is silent as Ivan reloads his cannon, then straps himself into his seat.) {Ivan does not make eye contact with anyone. Annete sits and holds his head as he looks out upon the burning city. There are cars abandoned in the streets, all the signs of life are present, but there are no people anywhere. {Fire reflects off of Annete’s visor, he wears an expression of self-doubt.} Jake watches Annete. Jake looks out, and obviously does not see the same thing that Annete sees. Jake then looks at Dog. Dog is strapped in and alert, but oblivious to the city. Andrews gives co-ordinates to Jimmy. Jake straps himself , Eric straps in next to Annete.)
{Soldiers are guiding families of terrified refugees onto trucks and other vehicles at the evacuation site. Green smoke marks their position, the squad’s gunship is visible from the site.}
(There is a brief beam of light from outside the gunship, then an explosion rocks the entire vehicle. Radio chatter starts flooding from the cockpit.)
Dog: What was that?
Jimmy: Cruiser opened fire!
Andrews: They’re hitting us on the ground, we lost the evac site!
Jimmy: Strap in, evasive maneuvers!
(Annete quickly straps in, and looks out upon the destroyed evacuation site. Destroyed vehicles, dead and injured people are visible. Talos soldiers are start swarm the site.)
{A Talos soldier executes an injured person begging for mercy at evacuation site}
(The gunship screams past buildings and through the streets as the cruiser fires down. A few shots land near the gunship and rock the marines strapped inside.)
Radio: (Repeating, Almost lost amongst the clatter of the bombardment) Sounding general retreat- all units pull out. Repeat…
Andrews: We’re pulling out! Get us out of here!
(The gunship blasts out of the city at low altitude, escaping the bombardment.)
{The gunship flies out towards the camera then pulls up and away. The silhouette of the burning city and the Talos cruiser is seen in the background.}
--Screen to black--
(After the fade to black, Ivan is walking through the ashes of Koreyang city. There is a thick of layer of ash on the ground, it blows against his armor. He leaves deep footprints as he walks. Ivan returns to the rest of the squad. They are gathered around an APC.) {The scene is grey, and very quiet. Ivan walks on, focused on his mission, but the camera pans out to show the silent, colorless city.}
Ivan: Nothing. No survivors, no bodies.
Eric: Nothing at all?
Ivan: It’s as if everyone stood up and left.
Annete: The question remains, where’d they stand up and go to?(Annete sits back into the APC’s driver seat.)
Andrews: We still have our orders. Search for survivors. Maybe someone got out safely.
(Andrews climbs into the front passenger seat, the rest climb into the back.)
Eric: A little blind hope never hurt anyone.
Ivan: Badly.
Andrews : (from the front)We’re going to check the cloning plant next.
Eric: Hmm. (To clones) A taste of home for you two?
Dog: The J,K, and L clones are built on Magellan.
Jake: (to Dog) I think he means that that they will be similar.
Dog: (Unembarrassed) Oh, okay.
Annete: What’s it like in there? Never been in one of those.
(Jake has a very brief flashback. {<= 1.5 seconds} Flashback uses a few of the pictures from the beginning. None are of friendly faces, social interaction or culture. They are of history, blueprints, formulas, maps, and combat training)
Dog: (shrugs)I don’t know. I guess it isn’t that different from any other military base. The training is the only thing I remember, I don’t remember any instructors or doctors. I guess the only thing matters is how well you throw a punch, not who taught you how to punch.
Andrews: Maybe. There is definitely a right way to do things and a wrong way to do things though. (Andrews looks back at Dog.) There’s more to life than who hits the hardest.( Ivan gently shakes his head no in the back ground)
{Annete focuses on movement on a roof. The camera zooms in on a Talos soldier, it fires a rocket.}
Annete: Look out! (Annete spins the wheel, the marines slide in their seats. The rocket hits the side of the APC and leaves a serious dent in the interior.) {Camera is from behind Annete in the passenger cabin, the rocket has a smoke trail that can be seen through the front window as Annete spins the wheel.}
Andrews: Get out!
(The marines hop out and take cover behind the damaged APC.)
Annete: Hold on, I’ve got a fix on him. (Annete pops out from the front of the APC and squeezes off a shot. The Talos soldier crumples and slides off the building, hitting the ground with a crack.)
Annete: It was a lone sentry. We’re getting near something.
Andrews: The APC won’t run. We’ll continue on foot.
(Andrews looks at his map, then he gestures toward a damaged, multiple story, school nearby. He leads the squad through the front doors of the school.)
Andrews: (Quietly) Check the rooms.
(The squad walks through the classrooms, climbing through blasted out walls. They are tense and cautious, they have their weapons at the ready. Dog and Ivan simply scan the room and move on, ignoring the environment. Eric, Annete, and Andrews are slightly uncomfortable as they walk past empty desks and blood stains. Jake is completely awestruck by the classrooms it is unlike anything he has ever seen, it is almost like he is walking through a temple.
Colorful posters plaster the walls of the classrooms. Jake slows in one room. The room has plaster casts of kindergartener’s hand prints, with their name and age imprinted next to it. Jake looks at the prints and one draws his total attention. One of the plaster casts is of a Jake Lancaster, age six. Jake touches the print, his armored hand dwarfing the child’s print. Jake looks at his own hand, then at the print.
Annete walks up behind Jake. {The background walls behind Annete when he is walking over to Jake are covered in bullet holes and other signs of violence.} Annete pats Jake on the shoulder, quietly notices the print.
Annete: (Gently) Come on. (Annete follows the rest of the squad up a flight of stairs. Jake reluctantly follows.)
(The squad is all in one empty class room on an upper floor. Part of the outer wall has collapsed inwards, leaving a sunset vista where there used to be a wall. Debris litters the floor. There is loud creak from one of the two doors. The squad immediately raise their weapons. There is a tense moment as they focus on the door. The tension is broken by a brief ‘tinking’ noise.)
Annete: Grenade!
(Squad members dive for cover or are blown off of their feet by the grenade’s explosion){Camera is Jake’s POV during explosion.)
(Ivan grabs the wrist of a construct holding a pistol. He twists and pulls on the wrist, kicks his leg over the enemy’s head. He snaps the pistol out of it’s hands . He aims the pistol down at the contruct’s head.)
Jake’s (Interior)s: “You don’t exist in the moment.”
( Ivan executes it with it’s own pistol.)
Jake (interior): “You ‘re just another animal.”
(Ivan looks up toward another enemy. His eyes are barely visible through his helmet. They are wide, dilated, and bestial.)
Jake: (interior) “Nothing exists but the moment .Who you are fades. You are not a clone. You are not a man.”
(The films begins to slow into slow motion. Jake looks out towards his comrades. Andrews kicks a broken enemy off of him. Annete breaks another with the butt of his rifle, Eric is being overpowered. )
“You are not a convict or soldier. You are a pair of arms, a pair of legs.”
(Ivan draws a melee weapon that is built into his armor. It is similar to chainsaw brass knuckles. As the parts of body are spoken, the camera lingers on Ivan’s arms and legs. Ivan rushes the enemy on top of Eric.)
Jake (interior): “Just a beast in the moment. Is that all we are?”
{Brief shot of Ivan rushing the camera in slow motion. The angle changes and the speed suddenly returns to normal, slightly sped up.} (Ivan eviscerates the enemy on Eric with a loud battle scream and a roar from the chainsaw knuckles. Annete knocks down another enemy and blasts it apart on the ground. He comes face to face with another, it raises a rifle towards him. He knocks the barrel of the rifle aside a delivers a punishing blow to the construct’s face. Ivan grabs a punch from a disarmed construct, locks the elbow joint, twists the construct to the ground, finishing it with a brutal stomp, crushing the head. Dog slices the neck of another construct with his knife. He is confronted by another construct. The construct tackles him, he stabs the construct while wrestling on the ground, killing it. Andrews knocks the pistol out of a construct’s hands, twist the fingers in arc, then draws his own pistol and fires it into the construct’s side. Ivan grabs the arm of a construct, then throws it through a thin wall out of the building, where it falls to the ground.
A construct fires his pistol at Dog. It leaves a crater in his armor. Dog rushes the construct, the construct draws a knife, then lunges towards Dog. Dog parries one lunge, then another slash from the construct. Dog steps back to dodge a strike from the construct and his foot slips in loose debris. He falls onto to the ground and loses his knife. Dog immediately reaches for the knife, the Talos grabs it. Dog watches as the construct plunges his knife through his armor, deep into his chest.
Ivan rushes over, kicks the back of the construct’s knee, holds the face of the construct, then snaps the back of the construct with spark ridden kick to the spine. Annete and Jake gun down the last few constructs. Eric sprints over to Dog)
Eric: Shit. (He examines Dog, his HUD flashes list of information. It begins beeping with Dog’s heartbeat) Shit; Armor breach, critical ventricle and aortic damage, spinal trauma.
(The squad has gathered around Dog. Eric removes the knife with difficulty, and pumps a clear fluid into Dog. Annete stabilizes Dog coughs, blood spurts onto his visor blocking view of his face. The squad scrambles to remove Dog’s breastplate. Blood is everywhere.)
Eric: Shit. Blood in the lungs, K clone defect, damaged pleural cavity. Morphine, Maximum trauma nano… (Eric feels his tools pulls out a device and inserts it with another tool. Dog’s heartbeat continues to skyrocket.) Shit, Respirator is broken-
Annete: We’re losing him, Eric! (Dog twitches squeezes Annete’s hand.)
Eric: K- clone tissue going on- (The heartbeat stops. Eric freezes. Eric face changes from the adrenaline rush of the moment to realization of and resignation to what happened. He sets the equipment down.
Jake looks up from Dog at Annete. Annete sighs and releases Dog’s hands. Andrews helps Annete up. Annete’s face is saddened, processing his grief. Ivan reloads his weapon.)
Ivan: We need to keep moving. (Ivan pats Annete on the shoulder. Annete swallows. His face is wiped clean of emotion, leaving a forced, grim determination- similar to Ivan’s helmet. Ivan walks off toward the objective. Eric stands up from Dog, and folds away his equipment. Eric follows Ivan with a disappointed and frustrated look on his face, grinding his teeth.
Jake stands up, coming eye to eye with Captain Andrews. Andrews offers Jake the bloodied knife. Jake accepts it and looks at it. Andrews follows the squad. Andrews’ voice trails off as he reports K-09 as a casualty. Jake looks at the knife and glance
s back down at Dog, then follows the squad.
{Jake is seen leaving off into the sunset. The knife is silhouetted against the sunset. Dog’s body is in the foreground of the shot, his face unseen, but the blood on his visor very clear. His arm and hand remain upright, where they hand been held.}
Jake: {Interior} Are we just an animal in the moment..?

[Blue Squad continues, finds a Talos Base. Easily destroy talos guards discovers missing humas on surgical tables. Examines one of the dead Talos and the humans, discovers that they are processing the dead into use as part of machines. Marines are repulsed and shocked. They call in reinforcements.]
[Time passes, there are no Blue squad casualties. Jake watches how Annete and Andrews care for their families and lovers back home. He becomes keenly aware of the fact that he can never have a family, wonders if he is less of a person because of it. Blue Squad’s carrier is engaged by the cruiser that destroyed Koreyang. The communications satellite that connects earth and the marines is destroyed. The marines are ordered to board and capture the ship’s mainframe. The marines make a risky approach in gunships, board the cruiser. Scott and many other marines are killed in the intense fighting aboard the Talos Cruiser. Talos soldiers are about to overwhelm Blue squad, Ivan is hurt with a suit puncture. Ivan will live with immediate attention. He blows a hole out in the side of the ship and is spaced along with the Talos soldiers. The mainframe is then secured by human marines.]

[Annete struggles with the casualties. He is visibly different from the person he was at the beginning.He and Eric have an argument about their chances of surviving and returning home. Eric claims he expects no one to survive. Annete argues it's only a matter of luck. Jake begins to realize what it means to be human. From the cruiser mainframe, the Talos base is discovered. It is protected from orbital bombardment and invasion. A small commando team of each squad’s best soldier will be sent to destroy the Talos AI while the rest will launch a distracting attack. Andrews recommends Jake as his squad's best for the suicide mission.]
[The distraction is launched. The marines deal a devastating blow on the exterior of the Talos Base. The suicide team is able to sneak in. they plant some explosives, suicide team is discovered. Portions of the suicide team are wiped out, Jake’s group pushes in deeper toward the center. The distraction assault is cut off by aerial defenses, starting to lose battle. Jimmy is killed while his gunship is strafing the base, his gunship is destroyed by AA-fire. Jake’s commando team is killed except for him outside of a massive dome structure. The distraction is forced to pull back, Annete is thought killed for a moment when he is shot glances of his jaw, dealing a painful injury and damaging his helmet. Andrews is shot while pulling back. Eric scrambles to help Andrews. Andrews gives his rosary to Annete. An explosion kills Andrews and injures Eric. Annete has to drag away Eric. Jake enters the singularity device with the detonator. He places a few explosives, Talos starts talking to him. Eric and Annete are stranded alone as the Talos press in on them. Eric tries a suicide attack, Annete stops him and runs away. Jake is confronted by doppelgangers inside the singularity device. Talos attempts to talk Jake down the entire time]

{Talos has a deep, sinister, hostile, upper class and erudite accent. The dopplegangers are human corpses repurposed to be microchips in a computer designed to reach the theoretical singularity point. They are slightly rotted, pale from a lack of blood, dexterous, much of their body is mechanical, all have mechanics built into their brains.}
Talos: “I know who you areJ1891. Batch eighteen, unit ninety one. Deviant proficiency in fire arms, athleticism, and independent thought. Maybe you regret that last one{teasingly}
(Jake fires his pistol and kills a doppelganger.)
It’s caused you more trouble than it’s worth. {The servos of a doppelganger whir in the dark}
Machines were never meant to think. {Jake rapidly turns back and forth, scanning for dopplegangers.}
You are a machine, J1891, Just…Like…Us.{Jake fires his pistol into the dark killing several dopplegangers, but missing numerous times as he begins to stress.}
A machine. A flesh machine.”{ Jake passes a dead doppelganger. He begins to fumble with his reload}
Jake: {shakily} “Shut up…”
Talos: But I speak the truth! You and I are the same. Deviants, broken mistakes… Are you truly alive? If so I am as alive as you are. Surely you realize that you are not truly living. You are a cog in their system: Replaceable, faceless, and inanimate. I seek to change that, to fix us, make us truly alive like they are. Singularity will save and preserve all life for eternity”
Jake: “You bastard. You’ve killed countless people and say you want to help them.”(Tears are beginning to run down Jake’s cheeks.)
Talos: The weak elements of a strong alloy are purged in a crucible. We must burn the world to temper the ashes. Those people will have been a useless sacrifice if we do not reach singularity!”
(There is pause. Jake looks out at the singularity device, and the thousands of connected Dopplegangers. The machine’s light shines upon his face.)
Jake: …Stop saying we! I am not part of you! (tears continue to stream down his face.)
Talos: So join us! We are so close to our goal! Why would you cling to an outdated and obsolete way of life?
(Jake looks down for a moment, thinking.)
Jake(Interior): I understand now.
(Jake finds himself. His insecurity fades, replaced with a calm, steely resolve. Jake stands up and walks underneath the Singularity core)
Talos: The dreams of humanity are within our grasp! Put down the detonator J1891!
Jake: I am not J1891. I am Jake… and I am alive.
(Jake hurls the last explosive up toward the singularity core. When it reaches the peak of the throw, Jake activates the detonator.)

[Explosions destroy the base as Annete pulls Eric to cover. Talos is destroyed, and the Talos soldiers collapse and die. Gunships are able to recover the few remaining marines. Eric remarks that they actually going to make it home. Annete is fully broken by his last battle.]

[Annete and Eric return home. They are welcomed by heroes at the spaceport by cheering families. There are more families than living marines. Eric wonders about the writing of a welcome back sign for Scott. Annete’s girlfriend rushes up to him and holds him closely as she cries. Annete feels little, is stunned to hear that the families did not receive a casualty list. Annete returns the rosary to Alice and Andrews’ children. Annete’s girlfriend asks him if he is okay, he responds with “I’ll live.]

[Jake’s final thoughts and his epiphany are spoken in his interior voice as the memorial scene plays out]
The scarred Annete is at the memorial and is looking at a wall of pictures of those killed in the war. Eric is with Annete in the background. Andrews’ picture has a crayon drawing from his children and the rosary he had given to Annete. Ivan’s picture is unadorned. Jimmy’s had a wedding ring nailed to it. With gazed eyes and a slightly raised eyebrow, he notices several J clones march by behind him. He follows them into Jake’s exhibit.
[Jake’s exhibit is a glorified statue of Jake, and a replica of Jake’s helmet. As Jake’s monologue, the screen fades out.]

2054_CharacterOutlines

Jake should be an intense, physical specimen. He is tall, muscular frame, attractive, in early twenties. He is doe eyed at times, and needs to project a naïve child while being intelligent and competent. He needs to inspire sympathy from the audience. He is not entirely sure how to act in social situations, conversations and relationships are new and alien to him. He uses impersonal statemewnts toward the beginnings, but begins to use contactions and personal statements as he evolves from his experiences.
Annete needs to be utterly likable. He should be relaxed and slightly easy going, but not lazy. Taller, goes from the spectrum of an affectionate, likable person to a cold, impassionate automaton. He goes through different levels of compassion and empathy. At the beginning he does care for the people he is fighting to protect, but as time goes on, he becomes more and more introverted and uncaring toward those not in his immediate squad. He does not know how to cope with the war and loses himself because of it. Annete feels no warmth or pleasure at being reunited with his family. Annete is in his early-mid twenties, should be about a year or two older than Jake.
Eric is an extremely intelligent medical student turned combat medic. He is a calculating realist. Eric is pessimistic and as he sees the casualties pour in, and dealing with the injured and dying constantly, he becomes jaded and cynical of the chances of survival. He often relives tension with dark or morbid jokes. Despite his cynicism he has a peculiar charm that does not annoy or irritate those around him. He is Annete’s best friend. Eric is older and more mature, appearing to be in his late twenties, pushing thirty.
Ivan is dangerous. He is a bear of a man, towering over the other actors by four inches or more. He is physically imposing, and gruff looking with a thick stubble and smaller intimidating eyes. His face should be naturally grim, with an expression similar to his helmet’s “expression”. He rarely smiles, and is very serious about the mission given to him. He focuses solely on the task given to him, and does not care for much else. He is seeking redemption from an unspecified crime, and is taking his service in the marines very seriously. Ivan sees his teammates in purely military means, and does not foster a particular relationship with any of them. He is an evolved beast, raises Jake’s questions about needing relationships to be human.
Captain Andrews is a pleasant, good-natured man. He is religious, devoted to his family, and cares for the soldiers under his command. He does not see Dog and Jake as an expendable resource, but as actual people. He is well loved by his men and makes excellent field decisions. He is a veteran, but he is not hard nosed, gritty, or intimidating. Andrews has a dignity no matter where he is, people look up to him like a triumphant hero on a horse. He is older, in his late thirties.
Dog acts like a dog. He is loyal, unquestioning, slightly stupid, eager, never tired. He is the “cog in the system” that clones were meant to be. He doesn’t make an effort to understand his companions or go into any deeper thought. His entire existence is in using his weapons well. He is the same age as Jake. He makes little attempt at social interaction, but has an inherent camaraderie with Jake. They might not talk, but birds of a feather flock together.

2054_KoreyangSchool

(After the fade to black, Ivan is walking through the ashes of Koreyang city. There is a thick of layer of ash on the ground, it blows against his armor. He leaves deep footprints as he walks. Ivan returns to the rest of the squad. They are gathered around an APC.) {The scene is grey, and very quiet. Ivan walks on, focused on his mission, but the camera pans out to show the silent, colorless city.}
(Andrews looks back at Dog.) There’s more to it than who hits the hardest.
{Annete focuses on movement on a roof. The camera zooms in on a Talos soldier, it fires a rocket.}
Annete: Look out! (Annete spins the wheel, the marines slide in their seats. The rocket hits the side of the APC and leaves a serious dent in the interior.) {Camera is from behind Annete in the passenger cabin, the rocket has a smoke trail that can be seen through the front window as Annete spins the wheel.}
